Grace and peace unto you this day! I hope you share my excitement about the opportunities we share together in worship and sharing our faith with the community we serve. In faith there are various ways we can be a channel of God’s love, and one of those ways is supporting our obligation of tithing. Meeting this obligation can and will be a challenging stretch for us, this I know, but one that is, I believe through faith, within our reach. Money itself is a lifeless thing, but when put to use by dedicated Christian groups, great things can happen.
Great things can happen! In fact, we read in Malachi – “’Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this’, Says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.’ I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,’ says the Lord Almighty.” (Malachi 3:10-12).
Great things can happen! However, I am concerned about a trend I have noticed in our giving patterns. We have generously given in the past, but have we truly brought our whole faith into our giving? Our giving should be nothing less than an expression of love; a devotion of thankfulness to God. In return, God declares a covenant that blessings will follow. In this regard, I encourage us to prayerfully consider that our tithe is an act of faith. When we consider God’s love for us, how can we not respond eagerly? Tithing is our covenant with God. It is our expression of faith and commitment. Great things will happen if we respond and consider our tithe in this manner!
I know you may still have questions regarding tithing. I want the opportunity to address them. I want the opportunity for us to receive the blessings of God! I want for us to finish the race God has set out for us to win! Therefore, in order to help address our questions, and perhaps any fears we may have regarding tithing, I will be introducing a 4 week sermon series and bible study series through the teaching of Mike Slaughter and his book, shiny gods. It is my intention to offer both a Sunday evening (6:30PM) and a Tuesday morning (10:30AM) class to accommodate our schedules.
In light of God’s blessings that lay ahead, may we consider what we will give to God for the remainder of the year; may we consider the need to respond with faith in giving God our tithe. I extend my deepest appreciation and faithfulness to you as we prayerfully covenant with God!
With you in God’s grace,
